Hi

I'm using Jamcast for streaming to a Roku Soundbridge and am loving it (killer feature: virtual soundcard) - looking forward to the formal release!

One thing - anyone know of an iPhone app that would enable Jamcast to stream to iPhone? Got to be cheaper than a second Soundbridge (or whatever) for the bedroom!

I spoke with the developer last weekend actually, and it DOES work. BigGrin

You need to tweak the device profile just slightly. In Server manager, find your iPhone and right-click and choose Properties. Paste the following into the ProtocolInfo field:

That is the proper list of media formats that the PlugPlayer application supports (Jamcast will set this automatically in a forthcoming version).

With this setting in place, the go-to transcoding target format will be FLAC, as will be the default format for the Virtual Soundcard. This is awesome if your wireless network can deal with it; if not, you can use the ForceMP3CaptureStream to force MP3 streaming for the Virtual Soundcard, or edit ProtocolInfo and remove audio/x-flac altogether.

Thanks for this - will do. Have a different problem at the moment in that Jamcast won't start on my Win7 PC at the moment - thought was a co-existence issue with Firefly, but disabling that suggests not. The recovery option for Jamcast is set for the service to restart on first failure; subsequently attempting to start the service manually leads to:


"Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion".

Is odd as it used to work and I can't think of what's changed. Will try to investigate further.

Hmm...

Your best bet for diagnostics is the Windows Application event log. To get there, go to Start->Run and type "eventvwr.exe". On the left, open Windows Logs and then Application. Any Jamcast-related errors will be indicated by the Source column; double-click to get more detail.

Paste any errors or warnings here if you need me to take a look for you.

Should have checked that first - sorry. *goes to get latest*. Apologies for false alarm (I last updated 16th Jan so I guess this is to be expected).

Just to report on the iPhone streaming thing. Currently I have my Soundbridge M1001 and iPhone both streaming from virtual soundcard and it all works well - they are even almost synchronised (well, most of the time).

Few minor foibles - PlugPlayer seems to drop out more often (like occasionally, compared to never on the Soundbridge), and PlugPlayer bungs virtual soundcard down in the list of playlists alphabetically, rather than at the top a la Soundbridge. Also it doesn't feel as intuitive as the Soundbridge and it seems to take more menu steps to actually play something. On the whole though it does the job, and definitely worth the £2.99.

As far as Jamcast is concerned though, happy to report that PlugPlayer on in iPhone does successfully stream from Jamcast. And hurrah for that.

So, does the PlugPlayer interface indicate what format the Virtual Soundcard is streaming in? If not there, you can check the medialog.txt. The reason I ask is because I suspect by default it will stream as FLAC, which is really great, but if you're getting hiccups in the playback you might set ForceMP3CaptureStream to True to stream to the iPhone as MP3 (320 kpbs), which might be better for you since it requires way less network throughput. You can change this in Server Manager in the device properties for the iPhone/PlugPlayer.

The developer over there indicated that a new version is forthcoming, so maybe he's addressed some of your concerns with the UI in that update.

I have another iPhone streaming solution that works great with Jamcast and you can even play your stream in the background. I am using an iPhone app called PocketTunes by NormSoft.

With this app you can add a stream URL to access your Jamcast Server. How I am doing it is by connecting to my home router via a PPTP VPN connection. Then I go to PocketTunes and click on the stream URL for the Jamcast Server. I'm streaming it as MP3. Once PocketTunes connects and starts the stream, you can click on the Play Station in Background link. It will open a browser and start the stream in a Quicktime player. Now you can do anything you want on the iPhone while your Jamcast stream is playing. This is SWEET!!!!

Thanks for this information! Now there's 2 known ways to get Jamcast to the iPhone. Very exciting indeed.
