Hi guys,

This is an amazing piece of software but I can't get the virtual soundcard features to work - at present I can access the stream but I can't hear anything.

Does it require that I have a soundcard with a loopback cable from line out to line in? I was under the impression that the virtual soundcard was a function that has this built in!

Anyway, thanks for any help anybody can offer,

Alex

Hi Alex!

On Windows 7 and Windows Vista, it should "just work". I'm assuming from your post that you're using XP; if that's a poor assumption on my part, let me know and we'll troubleshoot.

On XP, the Virtual Soundcard is reliant on the soundcard. 99% of the time this isn't a problem but requires some configuration. See the following thread on how to configure the recording input of your soundcard to capture audio:

Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help!

Thanks,
Scott

i can answer for him on this one... He is using Windows 7.

Scott - i note you say it should just work, However having tried this on both operating systems on windows 7 and Vista, the only way we managed to get the virtual sound card to work was where the sound card had a feature of a "what u hear" ( As its called on the Creative Sound card brands)

When using an AC97 realtek sound device, we needed to use a 3.5mm jack to jack from the speaker out to the line in - set the recording device to Line in and only then could we hear any audio.

(obviously acholland is my partner in crime trying to solve these various issues is asking this question... ive tried to convince him before about buying a decent sound card, but seems to like intergrated sound cards on his motherboards)

P.s i must admit i find it very difficult to grasp the concept that the "audio loop" just works? Could you explain how it does?
How does the virtual sound card get its audio before its transcoded?

Hi Alex,

In Windows Vista (and subsequently Windows 7), the Windows audio subsystem was completely revamped and includes software-based loopback audio capture capabilities. This feature enables the functionality the Virtual Soundcard needs independent of the audio card's capabilities by passing LPCM audio to Jamcast as it is being sent to the audio card.

There is a checkbox on the Option tab in the Jamcast Server Manager labeled "Force hardware audio capture mode" -- when checked, you're essentially reverting the Virtual Soundcard to use the "old" capture mode which is based on the selected recording input of the audio card. This option can be useful for Windows Vista/7 users experiencing audio glitches due to CPU stress.

It sounds like you guys have the hardware-based capture mode enabled, yes? I can't say that I've ever heard any reports of the default software-based capture on 7/Vista playing back only silence -- this is a problem report typical of the hardware-based capture mode when the appropriate recording input (what-u-hear, stereo mix, etc.) is not selected.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

EDIT: having just now looked at Alex's medialog.txt from another thread, unless there was an uninstall at some point it looks like you guys went right to the hardware-based capture option, is that accurate? I would definitely uncheck that and give the default a try! Smile

Hi, I had the same problem. I use a Intel D945GCLF2 Atom 330 Board (its a mini itx board) with 2 GB RAM, internal sound (HD from Realtek = ALC 662), three connectors (Blue/Green/magenta) as my mail server, music server, because this PC works 24 hours/7 days the week and needs only about 30 Watt. JamCast works perfectly on it with random tracks and using my Denon AVR-3808a as DNLA-Player. OS is XP Prof. SP 3 and actual drivers and fixpacks.

But working with Virtual soundcard does not work until I connected a cable from Blue (Line in)to green (Line out). It is a standard cable that normally is used to plug line out of PC to Line in on a LCD. Now I have sound when streaming with http or with direct virtual soundcard. But using this cable, we have a digital to analog to digital conversion and this makes the sound not better.
My Soundcard has a microphone input and a line in and driver shows a "Stereo Mix" in Soundcard Input Settings, but without that audio cable there is silence all around....

Regards,
Peter
