Why does Jamcast need to accept an incoming Internet connection?

My firewall program (MacAfee) flagged Jamcast as trying to accept an incoming Internet connection. Why would Jamcast need to do this if it's just taking the audio from the PC and streaming it to a device on a local network?

Hi kjkphilly,

Jamcast does not need to accept any inbound internet connections. Assuming you're behind a router and don't have port forwarding or DMZ configured, it shouldn't be possible for inbound internet connections to your PC. Do you have the exact message from McAfee, or perhaps more information with this message that might give clues as to what McAfee is actually detecting?

Thanks!

Scott,
I just got the MacAfee popup again when restarting my computer. I will email a screen shot to support@sdstechnologies.com.

Hi kjkphilly,

Got the screenshot -- thanks!

It didn't really provide any additional information, nor did Google when I searched for that message. But my very best guess is that this is the standard warning MacAfee gives out when it detect that an application starts listening for inbound network traffic -- which Jamcast does do when it starts up, but the usual intent is that this is all LAN traffic.

Jamcast can be communicated with from the internet if you let it -- which would mean that your PC is directly on the internet (no router), or you have a router and have purposefully configured port forwarding to allow internet traffic inbound to Jamcast.

My recommendation would be to make sure your PC is protected from being directly on the internet via a router, and click "Allow always".

Hope his helps. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks!
Scott
