    I have recently bought a WD TV Live with the aim of streaming Spotify amongst other things via my tvand hifi, however I appear to be having an unusual problem.

    Jamcast rebroadcasts Spotify with no problem from my desktop Dell via a WiFI network to a laptop PC. On the pc I open Windows Media player and select the Jamcast URL.

    Jamcast broadcasts any audio track stored on my desktop to the WD TV box (or the PC)with no problem. However if I select the virtual soundcard to rebroadcast either Spotify or a track playing on desktop I hear breaks in the audio and distortion coming out of the speakers. Simultaneously however the same track can be played on the laptop with no problem.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Hey stevieboy,

    Interesting situation you've got here. I think what we should probably first do is determine the stream formats and whether the laptop and WD TV Live are getting the same format or something else. If they are different formats, the issues perhaps becomes less confusing. Can you paste your medialog.txt to http://pastebin.org and share the link to it here?

    The distortion you describe can't be accounted for here, but the breaks/dropouts might suggest a network-related issue. Any observations there that are worth sharing?

    Lemme take a look at that logfile and I'll have some more suggestions for you after that.

    I've pasted the log file for yesterday. After posting my query yesterday I enabled the option "force hardware capture mode" set to 10s and everything was then fine and the Spotify streaming works fine. The media log should show the differences between before and after.

    I thought it wsa too good to last. When I listen for any length of time when Jamcast is in re-bro mode then there are breaks in the audio. Interestingly if I run Jamcast in non rebro mode and use it as the server to play a track straight from my pc the audio is fine. If I select the same track from the virtual sound card then breaks in the audio occur. Here's the media file when the track is played through the virtual sound card.

    Hi Steve,

    This might just be a bandwidth-related issue. The default streams for either software or hardware capture mode is uncompressed LPCM. Open up Server Manager and right-click on the WD TV device and click Properties, then set ForceMP3CaptureStream to True. You should reboot the device or at least disconnect/reconnect to Jamcast for the changes to take effect.

    Initially it seems to work but I'll check it out over a period of time and come back to you. FYI the audio formats supported by the player are listed as :-

    MP1/2/3/a, MPEG audio
    AAC, MPEG 2/4 AAC LC/HE, 1. ADTS 2. ADIF
    M4A/MP4A, MPEG 2/4 AAC LC/HE, Quicktime
    FLAC
    WAV, PCM (Microsoft), WAVE

    Thanks for that list, Steve.

    The reason I suggested the ForceMP3CaptureStream option is because MP3 audio requires far less bandwidth than uncompressed LPCM. From your problem description, I thought we might explore the idea that the audio dropouts were network-related.

    Much better with the change to MP3. Just the ocasional very short bresk in 30 mins of listening. The same combination of pc, network and player also plays WMV and xvid videos with no problems so I would not have thought network bandwidth was not a problem. Also the laptop has had no problems playing music via Jamcast over the same network.

    Do you not think that the fact that uncompressed LPCM does not appear as an accepted format for the WD TVLive player was the problem

    Hi Steve,

    Anything's possible I guess, but my assumption would be that if the device didn't support LPCM streaming that you never would have gotten it play anything at all. But you make a good point about video playback, and about the laptop, so it's a bit confusing.

    Another go-to possible cause is the audio card (this is XP, right?), I've seen where Stereo Mix sampling glitches simply because the card/drivers are of substandard quality, but then again converting to MP3 would preserve all of those glitches... so that thought is a dead-end too.

    Currently I'am testing the Jamcast server with my WD TV Live. I have breaks in the audio by using the the virtual soundcard / WD TV Live combination. On Xbox 360 everything works fine (even when using the same ethernet wall socket), but I prefer to use the WD TV. I change all settings for the WD TV as described above by Scott. When I get this work on my WD TV I consider to buy Jamcast.

    Hi Jeroen,

    After extensive troubleshooting and diagnostics, we were able to determine with a fairly high level of confidence that the WDTV device is not compatible with the Virtual Soundcard.

    stevieboy(above) ended up submitting a technical support request to the folks at WDTV. I haven't heard anything back on that, though.

    Unfortunately my trial version expired before I got the WDTV Live. Before that I used Jamcast with an Xbox 360, which I was very happy with. I just hate going back to using it with my noisy fan monster of an Xbox.
