I realise that there have been a number of posts on this subject but I haven't found one that outlines the specify steps for using Jamcast to get them to work together.
I have seen refences to enabling "stereo sound card" on windows XP. when i check the virtual soundcard tab all i can see is my standard sound card SoundMax Digital Audio.
when i click on the Devices Tab of Jamcast server I can see both of my Sonos Devices with their respective IP addresses but both of them have what appears to be black question mark on left side.
i would be grateful if you could provide specific steps i should follow in order to stream spotify over my sonos
thanks
kerry

Hi Kerry,
Thanks for stopping by. The Sonos isn't a UPnP/DLNA compliant device so there's an extra step you need to take.
From the Sonos Desktop you'll need to manually add the URL to the Virtual Soundcard. Go to Music->Radio and click the Add New button and enter the following URL and name it "Virtual Soundcard" or something like that:
http://server:58642/Media/audio/mpeg/CaptureStream
(replace "server" with the IP or computer name of the PC where Jamcast is installed)
Play that station on the Sonos and then get Spotify playing on the PC. If playback is working but all you have is silence, and you're running XP, then you'll need to make sure Stereo Mix is selected. Open the Windows volume control, go to Options/Properties, choose Recording and make sure Stereo Mix is checked, then hit OK and make sure the Stereo Mix mixer control is selected as the current recording input.
I hope this helps. Let me know how far you get, and if you have any questions.
Thanks!
Scott

Hi Kerry,
Are you sure that the Jamcast service is running? Could you try using the IP address of the PC instead of the computer name in the URL?
Do you have a firewall running on that PC? If so, disable that and restart the Jamcast service and try again.
Thanks!
Scott

I am pretty sure Jamcast is running or at least the Jamcast server manager says it is running. I have used IP address (http://192.168.10.234:58642/Media/audio/mpeg/CaptureStream). It seems I have music running through the Zone Player in Room 2 but the sound is very tinny. But it now seems that I can use the Line-In function from my Sonos and that seems to stream the music into Room 2 at a much higher quality sound level. Know what I don't know is whether the LineIn function is working due to JamCast.

Hi Kerry,
Great, that's good progress.
It sounds like now all you need to do is set the correct recording input on your sound card. Did you take a look at the recording mixer already, making sure that Stereo Mix or something similar is selected? What you describe sound like what you'd experience if the PC's microphone was enabled for recording.
Thanks!
Scott

Hi
Old topic, I realise. I have just dowloaded a trial version of Jamcast and I am trying to get it to work with Sonos. I have followed the procedure outlined above, created a new radio in Sonos and labelled it
http://192.168.1.11
:58642/Media/audio/mpeg/CaptureStream (192.168.1.11 being the IP of the laptop where jamcast is installed). All I seem to be able to get is a Sonos error message saying "unable to connect to 192.168.1.11:58642". Any suggestions on what might be wrong?
Thanks

Hi matteo,
Thanks for checking in on this. The error message from Sonos seems to indicate that the server is not listening, or that the URL is not correct. It definitely looks like a god URL to me...
I would suggest opening Windows Media Player (on a different PC if available) and going to File->Open URL. Paste that same URL in there and see if you get playback or an error. It's an easy way to test the stream out.
Let me know what you find out there.
Thanks!
Scott
