You're welcome David, glad you got this working. If you ever figure out what you did, come back and post about it -- it might help someone else out in the future (including me).
Thanks!

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your response but my CPU is only about 30% and the pb is systematic.
I never success to read a file from my TV by DLNA with jamcast.
With other soft it's OK but the interest of jamcast is of course to be abble to get playlist :-)
I note another error in the importlog file since i install the new version of jamcast but i don't think it's very important and i never succes to get playlist on my TV with the previous version too
Is there someone who succes in playing media on a Samsung TV with jamcast ?
Thanks

Hi,
I have an ACER laptop on Windows Vista and a Samsung LCD TV 40A756 which is DLNA compliant, linked together on my local network.
I insalled the Jamcast V 0.9.25 on my lptop and try to get my playlist (like deezer) on my TV
I can see and access to the "DLNA/My Music collection/Browse Playlist/Virtual Souncard" on my TV but when a try to playt it i have the message "Unknown File format".
Then i had a look on the medialog file (see below):
Do i missed something ? Is there a solution for this problem ?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi tt53,
No, you didn't miss anything -- according to your logfile, you're getting an error from Windows Vista when trying to initialize the audio capture. All I could find on this error code (0x88890017) is "AUDCLNT_E_CPUUSAGE_EXCEEDED" and no other explanations. At face value, it sounds like the CPU utilization on that PC of yours was too high to allow for successful audio capture.
Can you confirm this to be the case?
Thanks!

Hi tt53,
I'm going to send you a PM on this as your issue(s) seem to be moving past the virtual soundcard feature a bit.
Thanks!

I have a new Mac Pro G5 Quad Core Intel Xeon computer with Harmon-Kardon Soundstick desk speakers.
I've partitioned the hard-drive with Boot Camp and installed Windows XP Prof. Version 2 Service Pack 3.
Into this I've downloaded Jamcast Beta with the aim of playing Spotify music through my PS3 (linked wirelessly to my Mac via a router) and Hi-Fi system.
However although the link between computer and PS3 is established as the 'Rod's Music' logo shows up on the PS3 Menu page, with 'Virtual Sound Card' also shown, playing Spotify tracks on the computer aren't heard on the PS3.
I've tried going into the Audio Device Set-up in Windows XP, but 'Sound Card' doesn't seem to exist as an option - only 'Realtek HD Audio' or Realtek HD Digital'.
Any ideas?
Thanks - Rod.

Hi Rod,
"Realtek HD Audio" and "Realtek HD Digital" are your audio drivers, so what you're looking to do is configure either of those (whichever the audio is actually playing thru) to be using the Stereo Mix recording input. I'm trying to figure out, where did you see that you're looking for something called "Sound Card"?
Thanks!

Dear Scott,
Thanks - I was looking for the 'soundcard' as a Default Device for the Record Input, as you stated should be done in your very first post for this topic.
I have now tried both Realtek options below and still no sound via the PS3 (on the screen it says 'No track available' on the Virtual Sound Card symbol with 'PCM' under).
Choosing Realtek HD Audio In (in the Windows XP Audio Device Set-up) shows as a Record Input with adjustable controls for both Line In and Stereo Mix, which I've set to Max.
Choosing Realtek HD Digital In shows as a Record Input with a single volume control for SPDIF In, but this isn't 'highlighted' and therefore can't be adjusted (so maybe it's deliberately disabled within my system?).
Anything else that you can suggest?
Many thanks - Rod.

Hi Rod,
It sounds like the Realtek HD Audio is where you want to be at. On the recording mixer control, typically this only allows for one input to be selected at a time (designated by checkbox below the volume fader). Do you have Stereo Mix checked?
With Stereo Mix checked, restart the Jamcast service for good measure (you probably don't have to do this, but it can't hurt). Then play some audio on XP and try to play the Virtual Soundcard track on your PS3.
If that doesn't work, you can forward me your medialog.txt (or paste it here if you like) which will give us some clues as to what is happening behind the scenes. Also, you may want to check XP's Application event log for any errors or warnings.
See how you do and we'll take it from there.
Thanks!
Scott

Just found out about this... D/L from my work computer and I'm off at 5. Gotta run this app through the roommate's POS Dell due to not finding a Mac version (yet! I'm keeping faith). I'm also going to try to finagle some shared iTunes playlist action in addition to Pandora streaming.
I've got the beer getting chilled, and I'm excited to try this out!
Thanks in advance for providing this service

Hi
I have been trying your software together with my Phillips Streamium MCI500H. Playing media from my computer works fine, but not the Virtual Audio Stream. I can connect to it, but there is no sound.
I have been reading this FAQ, and I'm pretty sure that I have set up my soundcard properly. This is because I can record what I'm playing with other programs (like Sound Recorder).
I'm using XP. Is MCI500H incompatible with your software?

Hi Scott!
Just tried out Jamcast, streaming Spotify over WLAN to my PS3 and playing through my stereo. Works great, except I had to turn down the recording volume really low (20%) before the sound was acceptable (ended up downloading Audacity to record the stream and find a volume where the recording meters weren't maxed out). If there are others out there with Realtek HD Audio, you might consider doing this as well (just crank up the volume at the other end
)
Only thing is that the delay is a whopping 7 seconds. Is there anywhere I can play around with options for how the caching is done? (not even sure what factors contribute to the delay, but I'm guessing jamcast's buffering is a major contributor)
Thanks for a cool piece of software
Cheers,
Tarjei

Hi Tarjei,
Thanks for stopping by. Are you saying your Realtek card breaks up at levels above 20%? I hadn't heard that from anyone yet...
Jamcast does buffer but only when it's held up by the device and/or network. You might say Jamcast pushes data to the device as fast as it possibly can -- there's no reason to keep extra buffer on the server side since all devices do so already.
The delay on the device is going to be a combination of network latency, network speed, and the buffering time on the device. If the device re-buffers at all, the delay gets that much worse. Sometimes I will stop and restart the streaming to catch up when my device re-buffers due to wireless dropouts.
Beyond improving the quality of your wireless network to increase speed and decrease dropouts, Jamcast can convert the Virtual Soundcard stream to MP3. Right-click on your PS3 on the Devices tab, choose Properties, then set ForceMP3CaptureStream to True. An MP3 requires far less from your network and gets more mileage on your device buffer, and since Spotify is lossy already you may not even notice a loss in audio quality (it's a 320kbps MP3 stream).
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks!
Scott

Hi Tarjei,

Well, maybe I was exaggerating
The sound is at a "safe" level (never maxes out the meters) at 20% (or maybe it's 30... hard to tell). Anything below 50 is quite allright. At 70 and above anything in the treble range sounds like a badly tuned radiostation.

My connection is wireless 54mbit and I get sustained transfer rates of >4 megabytes/sec usually. The MP3 re-encoding sounds like a good idea for improvement, but I can't seem to get it working... My PS3 now just says "Unsupported data" when I try to play the Virtual Soundcard stream. Here's the log:

Also, when I turn the force-mp3 stuff back to "false" and restart the server it still fires up the ffmpeg process according to the log. Going to reboot and try again once I've posted this
UPDATE: Looks like this MP3 business just isn't working. I get unsupported data on the PS3 and the log is exactly as above. Initializes ffmpeg (which might be the point of failure - I don't see any ffmpeg process in the Task Manager), then adds the ps3 to the capture twice before removing it twice. If I just use the PCM stream it says "added to capture" when I start playing from the PS3 and "removed" when I stop. Do you have the complete ffmpeg command line so that I can try running that in a terminal to see what happens?

Your card is sampling at 44.1khz 16-bit stereo, so that's a constant 1.4 mb/s required to stream the Virtual Soundcard as LPCM. Your wireless quality sounds more than adequate to me to stream without conversion...
ffmpeg may be initializing and closing real quick, either due to error (which I kind of doubt, the command line looks fine) or more likely due to the PS3 disconnecting (ffmpeg is killed when a socket closes). The command line you see there is the complete command line -- you wouldn't be able to test it because it uses standard input to receive the captured audio from Jamcast all in memory.
Does the PS3 show you that the stream is now MP3?
Thanks!

Hi Scott,
I have almost the same problem with opening the virtual audio on my Samsung UE40B7050 TV. TV closes with unsupported audio format. Have tried with and without mp3 compression, no error message, just "removed from capture broadcast":
08-22-2009 19:35:01 Initialized WASAPI audio capture client.
Default format: PCM 32-bit 48000 Hz 2 channels
Capture format: PCM 16-bit 48000 Hz 2 channels

08-22-2009 19:35:01 Initializing process "ffmpeg.exe" -f s16le -ar 48000 -ac 2 -i - -f mp3 -ar 48000 -ac 2 -ab 320 -...
08-22-2009 19:35:01 Capture broadcast started.
08-22-2009 19:35:01 Client 192.168.0.176 added to capture broadcast.
08-22-2009 19:35:02 Client 192.168.0.176 removed from capture broadcast.
Could it really be that my TV does not support the format?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Scott,
I have almost the same problem with opening the virtual audio on my Samsung UE40B7050 TV. TV closes with unsupported audio format. Have tried with and without mp3 compression, no error message, just "removed from capture broadcast":
08-22-2009 19:35:01 Initialized WASAPI audio capture client.
Default format: PCM 32-bit 48000 Hz 2 channels
Capture format: PCM 16-bit 48000 Hz 2 channels
Output format: audio/mpeg 16-bit 44100 Hz 2 channels
08-22-2009 19:35:01 Initializing process "ffmpeg.exe" -f s16le -ar 48000 -ac 2 -i - -f mp3 -ar 48000 -ac 2 -ab 320 -...
08-22-2009 19:35:01 Capture broadcast started.
08-22-2009 19:35:01 Client 192.168.0.176 added to capture broadcast.
08-22-2009 19:35:02 Client 192.168.0.176 removed from capture broadcast.
Could it really be that my TV does not support the format?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Tommy,
No, I'm quite sure your TV will support LPCM (it's required to actually, it's a DLNA device). I believe there to be a slight compatibility issue with Jamcast and the Samsung TV's. Another user reported this recently, and I provided them with a diagnostic tool I have to assist me with correcting this issue but they had trouble getting it to work. Perhaps you'll have better luck. Would you be interested in giving this a go?
Let me know and I'll send you a PM with instructions.
Thanks!
Scott

Thanks!
Sorry about the late reply Scott, kind of shelved the Jamcast streaming for now.
The PS3 does not show the stream as MP3. When I enter the virtual soundcard folder it starts looking for files and after a sec or two just shows "Unsupported data".
Cheers,
T

Heya Tommy,
Coincidentally, I just spent some time with the PS3 and did some digging on the Virtual Soundcard as MP3 issue. The PS3 is really weird (in an obnoxious way) about how it requests MP3's. You might notice that MP3's take a bit longer to get playing than other media types -- also related to this same issue. I did find complaints from users of other media servers to this same effect. What makes the Virtual Soundcard stream problematic here is that it, unlike MP3's streamed from the disk or internet, has no defined beginning or end.
For now, I'm going to have to mark this as "known issue". I wish I had a solution for you now, but I'll revisit it after the upcoming release and spend some more time on it. In the end my hands might be tied, but I'll give it my best shot.
Thanks!
Scott

Well
Been trying to get this to work now for a couple of hours.
And there is no problem for the ps3 together with my tv to play my music from my computer (which is great, thanks for that application first of all
), but the virtual playlist won't work!
I'm not that good with computer-sound-things but I'll try to explain, my system is a hp-pavilion with a soundcard integrated in the motherboard. It's a "Realtek audio somtehing" if not remembering wrong.
when I'm trying I get this message from the medialog
08-31-2009 12:12:45 Capture broadcast started.
08-31-2009 12:13:16 Initialized winmm audio capture client.
Capture format: PCM 16-bit 44100 Hz 2 channels
Output format: audio/L16 16-bit 44100 Hz 2 channels

which seems good I think ?
But I checked my event log in xp and it said this
An unhandled exception occurred while receiving HTTP network data @ HttpConnection.receiveHttpRequest(): 32
and that was about the program "jamcast", so I guess something here is the matter.
On my TV the only thing you see this screen saver of earth and it says
"Virtual Soundtrack"
"-/-"
I'll tried with the help from the guide on page 1 here, so I changed to "back line in/mic, line in" as recorder device.
And as recorder properties I've changed to "stereo mix" as the prefered one.
Can't give any more information I think, anything you can come up with Scott ?
Best regards Jonte
P.S. Sorry for my english, I'm from Sweden.
