The addition of streaming video support to Jamcast is in the planning stages. As I don't stream much video myself, the only hard requirement I personally have is the ability to stream DVD video from ISO image or DVD file structure (VIDEO_TS). And, of course, real-time transcoding must be supported.

What are your must-haves for video support?

With 4.5TB of media via NAS and SATA RAID's across my LAN, I stream many of the formats in the list regularly. I own four different extenders, and stream to them from several servers (PlayOn, Tversity, PS3 Media Server/PMS, Twonky)on the rack.
The formats I listed are geared for compatibility with common modern devices -From smartphones, to consoles, DVR's and popular hardware extenders.
Aside from the variety of local media formats, if there are plans in the works for bringing in vodcasts/video podcast feeds, the transcoder has to be ready for the wide range of formats and codecs it'll be hit with.

Jamcast uses ffMpeg for transcoding, so most if not all of those formats can be supported according to ffMpeg's capabilities.

Indeed RSS with video attachments is on the list; I've put great efforts into Jamcast's media-handling framework for the latest release (0.9.6.5) to ensure that the location of the media is not important, so web-based video content will be as easy to include support for as disk-based video content.

The only thing I can say at this point (and not trying to be secretive or anything but I just can't commit to much at this point), is that Version 1 will not include video, but I'm really excited to get working on video as soon as v1 is behind us.

In other words, it's a personal priority. Smile

personally i'd love the ability to stream the deskptop from my laptop to my plasma (via my xbox) without the hassle of hooking up.
are you considering this, or would it be too complicated over wifi?

Hello,

Jamcast has a "virtual sound card" now. I would like to have a "virtual video card" too. This should catch the video output and bring it to the media renderer...

Then there is no need for transcoding anymore (only basic MP4 or h264 for the stream with in sync audio (L16, MP3).

The virtual sound card is the killer feature and the reason I paid for Jamcast. A virtual video card would be almost as great.
Streaming of video files is also a feature I'd like to see. It would elimiate the need for two server managers (I use ps3 media server for video files).

I am really impressed with the virtual sound card, it works flawlessly with my xbox360 streaming music from Spotify etc. A virtual video card would be the icing on the cake. Would like to be able to stream what I am seeing on my laptop straight to my plasma via the xbox setup. Would this be on the cards anytime soon?

If it's possible, then heck yeah! But I've not looked into it yet as focus is still on a few remaining audio-related features. If I gain any insight into the possibilities of such a thing, I'll definitely share it here.

I too vote for a virtual video card, I love the soundcard.
How about a tandem solution that would stream from my laptop to one of the new DLNA TV's like the LG netcast. A/V would have to be sync'ed. Let me know if you need a tester and I'll use it as an excuse to buy a new HDTV!! Let's have it Scott!

It would be awesome if all these formats were supported in the future. I could replace other programs I currently use and just run JamCast for everything. Though I'm guessing JamCast probably won't get support for the big sites like Hulu and such like PlayOn does.
