Jamcast Plugin Development - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are plugins used for?
A: Plugins are used for the purpose of extending the streaming content available via Jamcast. For example, a plugin might interact with content published by an online music service. That content can then be browsed and streamed to any Jamcast-compatible device on your home network.

Q: Who can write plugins for Jamcast?
A: Anyone with experience in a programming language that can compile for the Microsoft .NET Framework can write a plugin for Jamcast. These languages include C++, C#, Visual Basic, Perl, Java, Pascal, Python, and many others.

Q: Where is the SDK documentation?
At the moment, the SDK is unpublished. As the plugin framework is finalized in the coming days, the documentation will be prepared and made available online.

Q: So when can I start writing plugins for Jamcast?
Pretty soon. While the plugin framework is in place, we want to wait for feedback from the community before its internals finalized are published. This way we can be sure to accommodate the needs of the developers before it becomes more difficult to modify or enhance the plugin framework.

Q: I have an idea for a plugin. How can I get started?
Start a topic in the Development Forum and throw your idea out there to get a dialog started. The requirements behind your idea will drive the included features of the version 1.0 plugin SDK.
