Hi,

i've bought a Philips MCI500H and now i was evaluating different UPNP Servers to serve my music from HDD and iTunes to the hifi system.
And i have to say: Jamcast works great! No Problems with setup, it has found the client at first go, importing my iTunes library was done quickly and on-the-fly transcoding from AAC works well also (TVersity has always crashed at this point).

But hopefully i'm allowed to remark some points i really would appreciate:
1. My iTunes Library is streamed without problems but its shown as '<non-shared playlist references>' under 'Sharing' - what's this?
2. I think this is a heavy part, but i loved the possibility of the remote controlling UPnP offers (possible in TwonkyMedia Server). Because i'm often sitting at my pc and do not want to grab the stations rc to change the title playing.
3. What's about i18n? I could contribute a german translation.
4. I would like to organize and name the tree structure streamed to my station by myself (as possible with Asset UPnP Server) - any thoughts about this?

I hope you don't get me wrong, i'm an sw developer by myself and i respect the work you've already done and it was a lot - i'm sure!
I just wanted to declaim my thoughts about what would make Jamcast even nicer for me. Wink

Keep on!
Yoshi

Hi Yoshi!

Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad you've found peace with Jamcast. Smile

Here are my responses:

1) If you share a playlist of any kind (including iTunes), and they reference tracks not within a folder you've explicitly shared, they are accounted for by the <non-shared playlist references> item. The only difference between the tracks in there and tracks that fall beneath a shared folder is auto-maintenance: shared folders are monitored for changes and Jamcast is synced automatically (does not apply to network folders).

My recommendation to this effect would be to share your iTunes library AND the folder in which your music resides. This way you get the auto-maintenance.

2) Windows 7 has a new "Play To" feature that will work with some devices. Also, there are other software control points out there that will do what you're looking for. For example, check out Cidero.

3) I'm not sure what you mean by "i18n", but localization (language support) is something I expect to see in Jamcast in the future.

4) Also planned. This has been requested several times. Smile

Again, thank you very much for your feedback. I think you can look forward to many good things to come.

Thanks!

Scott

Hi Scott,

thanks for your reply!

This sounds nice to me! Smile

I'm using Jamcast for some time now and it's often more stable than commercial products - good job.

By the way: you can add the Philips MCI500H (more infos http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-MCi500H-05...) to the list of supported devices - it works well.

Only the scanning for shared folders and the database rebuild aren't transparent enough to me. Sometimes the db update only reads a part of the iTunes Library for no reason and on next update it finds again all tracks... little confusing.
Today it removed the complete <non-shared playlist references> item on startup.
Log says:
Quote:
09.14.2009 12:03:24 Cleaning up unused track containers...
09.14.2009 12:03:24 Container cleanup completed successfully.

Confused
Btw the date part of the log entries is a little weird, are you using windows localized formating with fixed positions for day and month? Because a german date is like dd.mm.yyyy.

Only one more thing: i would appreciate a button to initiate a manual db update! There isn't such a possibility yet, is it?

EDIT:
Adding a folder with many tracks and then removing it in the 'Sharing' tab while jamcast is still scanning the folder causes an unhandled exception.

EDIT 2:
I don't know whether it's a singular case with one standard incompatible m3u software, but i have a (older) simple playlist in m3u format where the first two lines are comments, each line prepended with a #.
Quote:
#Erstellt mit NiJO's-m3uWriter
#Version: 1.0

Jamcast fails to read this playlist because it tries to generate a path from the second line:
Quote:
09.14.2009 12:59:44 ERROR: File "D:\Artist\Album\#Version: 1.0" in playlist "D:\Artist\Album\Playlist.m3u" could not be imported: Das angegebene Pfadformat wird nicht unterstützt..

Freely translated: The path format stated is not supported..
I for myself wouldn't mind that this particular playlist couldn't be imported but it then stops the scan and the mp3 files in this directory aren't imported. Couldn't Jamcast just skip the bad playlist file?

Best regards and thanks,
yoshi

Hi yoshi!

Roger that on the localization, I know I have to take care of all of that at some point, and I will. Smile

If you'd like, email me that M3U file. The #'s are comments as I recall, and they should be handled, and even if they weren't it shouldn't stop the whole process as you mention. I'm happy to take care of this for you. Smile

Thanks!

Hi Scott,
thank you! I have sent you an email with the m3u file to the address in your signature.

Best regards,
yoshi
