Sorry for the reply this is for Scott, but I attempted to perform a Quick Reply on one of my former Posts (that you didn't lock) and it just seem to have disappeared into the cloud somewhere. Anyway I just wanted to first Thank you for not only your responses but your kind and helpful attitude as well - very unusual in the world of tech support. I think you answered most of my off the wall questions. Don't worry about the delay, I'm just one of those people who just don't give up until they learn what and where the issue is so I keep going and going and going...sort of like the Energizer bunny. So I am coming up with questions before you can even answer the first! Actually I am sorry to say that I had almost given up on JamCast... I know the horror just saying that. I even uninstalled and went to try several other media apps. Both paid and free. After your kind responses and playing with those apps (which were nothing like Jamcast - ugly gui's, read a 3 inch book to figure out how to use them and so on, I became however even more frustrated! Why? Because I was beginning to think that the issues I was having must be my XP machines, something installed on them, a firewall setting, some configuration or something. But on each of the other products tried.. guess what.. UPnP discover went off withougt a hitch. So I have reinstalled Jamcast and I am back to square one. I tried stopping and restarting both the SSDP and the UPnP host services as you mentioned still same issue. My question is regarding the Windows Media Network Services... would they even be running if I was not sharing? Are they running by just installing Media Player? I wasn't sure as I do not have WMA Sharing enabled any longer, after my initial testing I turned it off for all users... but perhaps this service isn't limited to sharing?? In any case I will go back and try again and see if I can locate this 3rd service. Still I think it is strange that the other applications I tried do not have this problem with the exact same machines, nothing else changing except installing one app and removing the other. By the way interesting seeing your location pop up as Orlando Fl. An old Orlando boy myself. Used to work in Alt. Spgs for CDP and also out at Lk. Mary for Seagate or Veritas or whatever they are calling themselves these days. Cheers! And thanks again! EdR

Hi EdR,

Hey cool, yeah I hail from the Maitland area so I'm in the same pat of Orlando you used to be in. Smile

So, I just wanted to be clear -- where are you testing for discovery, is it Windows Media Player or in the Network Places area or some other application? And at the moment are you only having trouble with discovery on XP?

Regarding your question about Windows Media Network Sharing services, that service itself shouldn't be running if you aren't sharing or looking for shared media, but the SSDP/UPnP Device host services are used by Windows Explorer as well so they might be running despite WMP's sharing status.

Let me know where we're at, like I said I just wanted to be clear on where things are going bad for you at the moment.

Thanks!
Scott

Hey Scott,
Hopefully reply will work this time... I actually got a different reply prompt.. so maybe it was me in the cloud somewhere and not the Forum. Anyway, to clarify the issue I am having is this. When the Jamcast service is started, Any Vista or Windows 7 machine on my network immediately gets the little icon down in the Notification area of the task bar and says that a new Multimedia device (or something to that effect) is now on my network. I am able to then establish that connection and use it with Jamcast and stream with no problems (IT's GREAT!) Sorry for shouting... thought I was Tony the Tiger for a minute. The problem is that the notification that occurs as a result of the UPNP host services and the SSDP services that works correctly on Vista and Windows 7, does not work period on any XP PRo machine I have. No discovery, no litte pop up, no alert, no nothing. Almost every other app I have tried, the discovery goes off without a hitch.. and works (according to thier documentation) almost better on XP than Vista and does so without a hitch on all of my XP Pro machines (about 7). However I can't get Jamcast to wake up one single XP machine, no matter what the config, stoping and starting the services in a different order or anything.

Best Regards,
EdR

Hi EdR,

OK, gotcha.

The "problem" is that Jamcast doesn't have a presentation page ( in XP if you double-click the device icon in Network Places you're taken to a web page for the device). I put problem in quotes because to me this seems like a silly reason for XP to reject Jamcast as a device of interest on the network. In Vista/7 this anomaly is not present.

Nonetheless, I've added a simple presentation page to Jamcast and updated the device description appropriately, and now XP will show the tray icon notification and Jamcast in the list of UPnP devices as you expected.

This update will be available in the next release.

Thanks!
Scott

Ok Scott,
By the way know exactly where Maitland is! Used to get my haircuts for years since I was a small boy there at Mane Trainers in the little plaza there on the corner of 17-92 and... I can't remember the name of the darn road.. maybe maitland blvd... I know it takes you all the way out to 436. I think the Melting Pot Fondue restuarant is down that road too, or at least it used to be... everything has changed in O-Town so much I have to reacquaint myself every time I visit. Last visit was at least 3 years ago.

Anyway that's great that you figured out my issue on XP.... and now for the drum roll.... when will we see this next release that will have this cool little thing in it so my XP machines will work? Thanks for the thourough explanation too! I wasn't going crazy after all. Thanks for all your hard work!

Regards,
EdR

Hi EdR,

The Melting Pot is on 17-92 and Howell Branch Road, that's probably the road you were thinking of. It goes all the way to 436 (as does 17-92). Smile

The release in progress is just a maintenance release so it's really a matter of sorting thru the additional issues on my plate and seeing which ones will be addressed now. With nothing terribly major lingering at the moment, you probably won't wait more than a week.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions about anything.

Thanks!
Scott

Yup Scott,
You were right... I remembered it as soon as you said it, Howell Branch Rd. I'm surprised I didn't remember it better. Yeah in that same little plaza (barber shop is sort of hidden in the corner) is also a Beauty salon where I believe my mother still gets her hair done to this day! Also on the corner, if it's still there is a small square building. It has been quite a few different businesses over the years... Originally it was a Royal Castle / White Castle - I actually ate there as a small kid. It's been a Baskin Robbins, an Antique Store and who knows how many other things since. Gosh this takes me down memory lane.
Anyway thanks for the information. I will look forward to the update, maintenance release or whatever! Thanks again for your help! Best Regards!

Thanks EdR you too!

By the way, if it's the same building I'm thinking of, it's an italian ice place now.

Thanks Scott,
I think that is the place - obviously has seen some changes over the years. I thought there were more trees around, especially behind the plaza where it lead down to a little park around the lake. But maybe it's been 4 laned now or something and the tree's had to go. By the way what is Archives? That store was a drugstore the last I knew. I think it was a Rexall Drugs or something like that. Funny how the years changes things. Thanks for the memories!
