Hey all,
As of Jamcast version 1.5, the server will keep your PC/laptop from sleeping while streaming media. Previously, Jamcast did not prevent your computer from going into sleep mode while streaming media.
We're seeing some mixed results with this new code and would love your feedback. If you have a moment to share, just let us know whether or not Jamcast is behaving properly to this effect. The expected behavior is simple:
1) While streaming, your computer cannot enter sleep mode.
2) As soon as streaming has stopped, the computer is allowed to sleep.
It's important that the actual network connection between Jamcast and the streaming client be closed in order for the PC to sleep. With some devices, simply pausing the playback will not do this.
Mostly, we're concerned with the PC going to sleep during playback. If you observe this behavior, please let us know.
Thanks in advance!
Scott

hey jamcast, I was just looking into that forum because of a problem with the sleep mode. I stream from a win 7 64 bit pc to a marantz melody. streaming runs smoothly but after streaming ends the pc falls asleep right afterwards. This might be logical but it is not very useful. But what is even worth is that after waking up the pc it takes ages until the marantz streaming device finds it again (i guess it is aroumd 10 minutes)
Ive just installed the new jamcast version 1.6.133, but I havent tried it yet. I experienced the problems with the previous version.
thanks,
daniel

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your feedback on this! With sleep mode enabled, the idea is that Jamcast will keep your PC from sleeping while streaming is occurring (otherwise it wouldn't stream anymore!) . What is the behavior that you would expect or would be more useful?
Yes, this behavior remains unchanged in 1.6.
Thanks!
Scott

Well it's ok that the computer goes into sleep mode. But it should not do that right after the last song has been streamed. It would be useful if the windows timing of the sleep mode should start to countdown right after jamcast is done with the streaming. So there would be time enough to choose a new playlist to stream.
The other thing is even worse. When you wake up the computer, jamcast is not visible to the client. It seems that jamcast is not sending status update to the network. So it definitly should update its status when the system has been waken up.

Hi Gaspedalo,
Thanks, great feedback! Yes you're right, Windows manages the sleep timer which decides when the computer can go to sleep, and Jamcast and other applications can only tell Windows that the PC should be eligible for sleep or not. That's how it works now, as far as I can understand, and there is actually no Windows API to tell the computer to "sleep now".
However, there is a documented issue with Jamcast where the call to Windows to make the PC eligible for sleep occurs when network streaming is completed, not when the track is actually done playing. Jamcast actually has no way of knowing when the track has stopped playing, it can only estimate based on the duration of the track -- this enhancement will be scheduled for version 1.7 which should be out sooner than later.
Anyhow, the above issue may be why it seems that the PC sleeps immediately after playback completes... it may be a coincidental timing issue.
Regarding Jamcast being discoverable after wake-up, I'll look into that as well. I think there is a lot of work to be done there actually, the Jamcast server probably needs to detect sleep/awake and stop/start all subsystems as necessary.
Thanks a lot for your feedback, I will make sure to get this right.
Thanks!
Scott
