After much trial and error last night with Jamcast and many other potential solutions, I was finally able to stream Grooveshark's output to my Boxee Box. While the actual settings required to properly set it up were not obvious to me for a while, in hindsight the software seems about as straightforward as it can be to accomplish this task. I'm really pleased with Jamcast and appreciate the that work that has gone into it. Thanks!

Thanks, that's very nice of you to say. Smile

What sorts of challenges did you have with setup with the Boxee? I've not had anyone stop by yet to report trying Jamcast with Boxee, so it would be great to hear about your experience!

Thanks!

Hi,

I am trying to get this to work with my boxee box without joy so far.

I navigate to playlists and click to play (whilst spotify is playing on my laptop). Boxee loads up the music player but no sound is played. The musid graphics just sit there instead of dancing around so clearly no source being detected.

Some advice on how to get this to work would be great :-)

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

Sounds like you're almost there. Have you installed Jamcast on a Windows XP computer? If so, you'll need to make sure that your audio card is set to record from Stereo Mix which is how Jamcast will capture your Spotify audio. Check out this video to see how:

Hope this helps. Let us know, Jamcast is starting to get some attention in the Boxee user community and it would be helpful to know what people's experiences are like.

Thanks!

Hi scott,

I found out about jamcast from the boxee forum, one poster has apparently got it to work, so I am keen to get mine going to. My aim is to use it to play spotify through my Boxee Box.

I am on Windows 7
version 1.5.1.111
Virtual sound card settings I have left on default

So far I have tried getting boxee to play spotify and a local mp3 on my laptop but without fail so far. Sometimes boxee just pauses when trying to play and others it brings up the player but either no sound or occasionally some very odd distorted tones begin to play.

I have also asked in the boxee forum for more help as am aware this could well be a boxee bug rather than settings in your software.

Any ideas let me know.

Many Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

OK, could you paste your medialog.txt to http://pastebin.com and then share it here so I might have a look? The logfile will hopefully give me some clues as to what is happening. The topic starter above mentions having to tweak some stuff but he did get it working... let's see if we can't do the same.

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

OK, thanks for posting that. Let's try a couple of common tweaks and see where it leads... I can see the Boxee making requests and Jamcast responding appropriately but the Boxee doesn't like what it's getting back, this much seems clear.

Open Jamcast Server Manager and visit the Devices tab, then find the correct list item for the Boxee device and right-click and choose Properties. Set ForceMP3CaptureStream to True, then Apply your changes. Restart the Boxee (might be important) and see if you get different results.

If that doesn't work, try setting EnableSeekTrickMode to True following the same procedure above. You should leave ForceMP3CaptureStream True while you try this setting out as well. You can also try with ForceMP3CaptureStream as false if you like.

If neither of these work, please paste the logfile again so that I can verify that the changes all took as expected.

I have a feeling that this will get you there, we'll see... Good luck.

Thanks!

Scott

Hi Dan,

Great. Smile

With your logfile and this feedback I was able to add a system device profile to Jamcast for Boxee so that ForceMP3CaptureStream is automatically set to True when the Boxee is detected. So, in the future the Virtual Soundcard should just work with no fuss. Smile

I've sent you a PM.

Thanks and enjoy!

Hi!

First, did Jamcast identify the Boxee? You can tell by whether or not the Boxee icon appears in Jamcast Server Manager on the Devices tab.

When you locate the Boxee in the list of devices and open the Properties up, what are the settings you have? As far as I know, the correct settings are:

ForceMP3CaptureStream = true
EnableSeekTrickMode = false

If you have EnableSeekTrickMode = true, this may be causing the stuttering.

Let me know what you find out.

Thanks!

No Jamcast can't identify Boxeebox it is listed as unidentified device under devices. Is there any way to make Jamcast to identify Boxeebox ??

I tried the tweaks under setting but they didnt work either. If I make ENABLESeekTrickMode = False then boxee can't play the file under virtual soundcard at all.

Any solution on this would be really appreciated.

Having a similar issue. If I use the enableseektrickmode to true then I can receive the stream on my boxeebox, but it stutters at a maddening rate. If I use enableseektrickmode to false, then it will not play at all on the boxee.

Same problem. Use to work, but with the latest update on boxee box and jamcast 1.6.1.133, the ForceMP3CaptureStream doesn't seem to do the trick anymore... Sad

Hey guys,

An update on this issue with Boxee and the Virtual Soundcard...

The latest update from Boxee does indeed break the Virtual Soundcard -- the device is now doing an incremental download of audio streams that presumes the entire stream from start to finish is available and can be requested in chunks. This doesn't work with the Virtual Soundcard since it is "live". We've seen this choice of implementation on other devices as well, and even implemented a hack to get around it which works with some of those devices, but unfortunately with the Boxee it causes terribly stuttered playback.

At this time we're looking to submit an issue report to the Boxee engineers and will see where that dialog leads (if anywhere). Their support seems to be pretty responsive, so I'm optimistic and will keep everyone updated as the issue progresses.

Thanks!
Scott
