This is a real pain for those of us with large collections. The loading time as well as the selection when you have say over 100 artists/albums in a particular grouping. "S" "R" and "C" are particularly large ones for me. It would be nice if there were one switch/setting where I could tell jamcast to automatically create sub-groups "Sa", "Sb", "Sc", etc... only when necessary - for example only when over x number of entries. So Queen and Quarterflash would all be together in one "Q" list, but "The Clash" would come under "C" then "Cl" while the "Cure" and "Cult" would appear under "C" then "Cu" like example below:

Code:

|-A ("A" and "B" have less than x entries so
|-ABBA they appear in one list)
|-Alarm, The
|-B
|-Beatles, The
|-Breeders
|-C (assume "C" has more than x entries
|-Ca auto create sub-entries only when
|-Cash, Johnny Albums/Artists exceeds the x number in the settings)
|-Cl (only create sub-group if needed in collection
|-Clash, The so no "Cb" group)
|-Co
|-Cornershop
|-Costello, Elvis
|-Cu
|-Cult, The
|-Cure, The
|-D
|-E
etc....

This would improve speed and usability. Right now - it is a bear for people with large collections. Many UPNP Players will not buffer the lists so you are forced to reload the entire listing each time. Shorter lists are preferable it saves bandwidth and time on reloads of large amounts of data - most of which will not be used.

Thanks for a great piece of software. I use both the UPNP and Virtual Soundcard parts. Jamcast allows me to stream my collection all over the house to various "internet" radios. I am very excited for the Android app. I am tempted by audiogalaxy, but don't want to install another server. Please consider adding me to your beta testers. Thanks.

Hi dmets,

Thanks for your feedback on this. I do realize that large lists is a pain point for many users and that Jamcast is lacking with respect to making browsing large libraries a bit easier. This request has actually been outstanding for a long time under the heading "Ability to customize browse tree". Unfortunately for those waiting for it, it's a huge undertaking and gets passed over fr scheduling every time...

Eventually I imagine it will get scheduled for development. Smile

Thanks for your kind words about Jamcast and I'm glad you're getting good use out of it. Regarding Android, I'm happy to include you in the beta testers -- I'll be offering it to any paid users first, via the Jamcast for Android section in these forums. If it's not too much trouble, check back every couple of weeks as I'll be sure to post the announcement/invitation there. I'm certain you'll prefer Jamcast over Audiogalaxy... that is, whenever Jamcast is actually released. Wink

Thanks!
Scott

I really, really need to echo this request. Before settling on Jamcast over the host of other media servers available, this feature (or lack thereof) was the one thing that almost held me back. The server that came in second had a nifty indexing option that allowed you to browse artists by the first letter of their name. HUGE time saver when you're dealing with large collections.

In the meantime, I've found a workaround of sorts, by creating playlists for the artists I listen to the most. Unfortunately, that also means the rest of my collection is more apt to remain dormant because it's such a pain to pull it up.

Overall Jamcast is an incredible product. I've been wishing for this functionality ever since I built my first PC over 15 years ago. At last, the future has arrived!

Hi Corey,

Thanks for the kind words about Jamcast! Smile

I agree with the necessity for this feature, it's always been about the level of effort to get there is all. However, I will revisit this in the near future as Jamcast's 1.7.5 release brings us even closer to a more pluggable content directory that would help support such a feature.

I hope we can get this there soon!

Thanks!
Scott
