Hi Scott,

I've been using and really enjoying Jamcast for a couple of years now (BTW, the Android Beta is great!), and I've occasionally wondered if it would be possible to do some volume leveling when songs are added to the Jamcast server. I think Windows Media Player does something like this, and it would be useful to be able to normalize the volume from different recordings, particularly when playing playlists of tracks from a variety of sources. Thanks for considering this.

Regards,

Jambo

Hi Jambo,

Glad you're still enjoying Jamcast and getting some use out of Jamcast for Android! Smile

One of the more common ways to handle volume normalization is via ReplayGain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReplayGain), which consists up an up-front waveform analysis to determine a normalization factor, and that value is tagged with the rest of the track metadata. Then, if Jamcast supported ReplayGain, it would read that value from the track metadata and make on-the-fly adjustments to volume as necessary.

I'm not familiar with what Windows Media Player does... do you have any more information on that?

I've looked into ReplayGain in the past and it would be simple enough to implement (famous last words), if the demand were there. Consider it under consideration. Smile

Thanks!

Scott

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, Scott. Thanks for considering my suggestion. I'm unable to paste an image directly here, but when, in Windows Media Player (Version 11), one selects Library>Add To Library..., the window that pops-up offers a check box entitled: "Add Volume Leveling Values for All Files (slow)." This does, indeed, require additional time to load new files, but in my estimation, it's worth it. I'm not sure what technology the WMP folks are using to achieve this.

Regards,

Jambo
