So, who's listening to Podcasts thru Jamcast? Any favorites that you can recommend? Is anyone getting any use out of the OPML feeds?
TWiT for me has always been a favorite. I included a few of my other favorites in the built-in feeds that shipped with Jamcast.
Most of all, though, I dig browsing the NPR Podcast Directory under their Music category. The content for all of those shows updates very regularly, and they showcase some amazing music on NPR that you'll not hear on any mainstream terrestrial radio. There's always something new to check out on NPR!
How about you guys?

Wow, OK. I guess I can just remove this feature altogether then.

what is OPML? I just know about rss feeds. This works great with my Pandora stations.
But I can't seem to get the feed to show on my xbox, but the virtual soundcard does the trick.

OPML is basically an outlining markup language, but it commonly used to represent collections of syndicated content. For example, NPR publishes an OPML feed that organizes and represents all of their available Podcasts. Because OPML is also syndicated, if NPR adds a new Podcast to their lineup, they'd update their OPML and you'll have access to he new content within hours. The depth of an OPML outline can be infinite, and OPML outline nodes can link to other OPML feeds, so in effect you get a really neat way to discover new RSS content.
The problem with the Xbox360 is that it uses search functions to build it's media UI (sounds confusing, I know), but essentially this hides the non-library content that Jamcast exposes. Technically, Jamcast could optionally provide RSS feeds as "Playlists" and the Xbox360 could access these, but as far as OPML is concerned because of it's tendency to be deeper than just one level, as of now the Xbox360 will never be able to represent these feeds.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks!

I love the way it's implemented, and the actual functionality... I just don't like listening to people jabbering on all the time, and that's my impression of podcasts ;-)
I'm much more of a music person, and podcasts don't tend to have much music...

The NPR podcasts have some amazing music-oriented shows with live performances. Definitely check those out.

I only installed Jamcast a few hours ago and podcasts is about the first thing I checked out. Still trying to work out how to find podcast directory addresses though!
Nice product!

Trying to find more directories you mean? Google for "podcast opml" if you haven't tried that already.
TIP: You can drag/drop RSS/OPML feeds into the Jamcast Server Manager lists to add.

Thanks Scott. Please don't get rid of the podcasts feature, I think it's great. I can listen to what I want when I want through the hifi.
Did what you suggested, Googled "podcast opml" but every time I try to drag the url (or enter manually)
http://opml.podcast.com/...'i','1'
I receive the message that it's not a valid url. Any suggestions?

Sorry, cracked that one. What I'd like to be able to do now, but I have the feeling that's impossible, is to edit the Server Manager directory list eg to rename or change the order of the podcast channels. Can do??

Are you talking about essentially editing the OPML feed itself? If so, no can do. I don't want to say impossible because nothing's impossible, but that ability would add some complexity as the OPML is refreshed every so often (I forget the interval, a couple of hours or so though), so the challenge would be in refreshing the feed and keeping your edits at the same time.
If you're talking about renaming the OPML feeds themselves and re-ordering them in Jamcast, that's definitely possible and is a feature request I can submit on your behalf if you like.
And I was just kidding about getting rid of the podcast/OPML stuff. I think it's a cool feature.
Thanks!

No, I am a pretty basic IT person, I was just referring to being able to edit and organise what I see scroll past on the screen of my Freecom Musicpal. The podcast "streams" I have manually entered are right at the bottom of the list and I therefore have to scroll right thru' to get to them. They are my favourites, as you can imagine. Also the name that has been assigned is far too long, off the screen and you have to wait ages to be able to read which one you are about to choose. If you
could
request that feature on my behalf I would vbe very grateful. Can you let me know if it is ever implemented?
Without wishing to abuse. I have noticed in msconfig that Jamcast is taking up some 96,000kb of memory, the most by far. Is this normal? Will this cause my (on its limits) pc to slow down? Should I set the priority level lower?
Many thanks.

OK, I've submitted that as a feature request for you. Thanks for the suggestion.
Regarding the memory consumption, without getting to technical, a truly accurate representation of Jamcast's memory consumption is on the first tab in the Server Manager. The number you see in task manager is what is called the working set, and should any other applications need memory this working set will be trimmed to a minimum of the true memory usage. It's nothing to worry about unless the number you see in the Server Manager itself is extremely large. Typically Jamcast is using < 10MB RAM but this number increases a bit temporarily during playback or when making large browse requests. Let me know what you see there and if you still think it is a problem.
Thanks!

Adding the ability to directly edit, create, and manage custom opml's would further extend this software and its userbase.
Providing this ability could allow the user to setup categories and organize their large collection of feeds in a way which works best for them and the extenders they're viewing/listening to their media from.
It's nice to have the ability to drag and drop feeds, but please consider the advantages of allowing user defined opml's.

Hi synflux,
Thanks for the feedback. I definitely see the advantage of using user-generated OPML as a way to further enhance browsing of podcasts. My thought would be to simply allow the addition/synchronization of OPML from disk, so as to give the ability to organize your favorite podcasts without building an OPML editor into Jamcast. What are your thoughts?
Of course, a workaround today would be to use an OPML editor such as
this one
and publish your OPML to a web server (local or remote), then share via Jamcast.
Thanks again for the feedback, I've added this as an enhancement request to the issue tracking system.
Thanks!
Scott

I'm using podcast/OPML right now. Seems handy, but:
* If I remove CNET News Daily podcast, every time I launch the server is there again.
* Sometimes after a manual shutdown and restart of the server, podcast list and OPML list are empty until you restart the manager app.
I understand this service works as "download-on-demand", but in the future could be nice:
* Ability to schedule downloads, to download podcasts at times where you do not need the bandwidth.
* An option to specify the local folder where the podcasts get downloaded.
* Automatic deletion of old episodes.

I've been trying out the podcasts with some of my favorite NPR radio shows, like Car Talk, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and Whad'ya Know?, and it seems to work great. It's convenient to use this to listen on my Roku Radio at my convenience.
I have also tried the Tony Kornheiser show, and the directory of shows comes up, but they don't play. I've had an issue with this show on other podcasters, but I don't know what the issue is. The URL is
http://www.stationcaster...ations/wtem/rss/?c=580.
Any insight is welcome.
Nice product!

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the feedback, I'm happy to hear you are enjoying the software.
Regarding the Tony Kornheiser podcast, it appears that the Soundbridge is mangling the URL for some reason. I'm not sure what's unique about this particular URL as the device clearly doesn't exhibit this behavior for other podcasts, but I'll come up with a solution and try to get it out in the next release.
Thanks again!
