HI Scott,
Im on the free trial of Jamcast and want to use it to play spotify. Im currently using a Sony N100 media player and it is not recognizing the Jamcast server in the server display menu. In the devices tab on the Jamcast server manager, it shows the N100 as an "Unknown device", but the IP address is correct. The player is connected to my network and plays netflix and pandora fine. Are there some settings that I should change for this player to recognize the Jamcast server?
Forgot to mention Im using windows 7 professional, 64 bit edition

Hi Otis857,
Thanks for checking out Jamcast!
Would you be able to grab a screenshot of the Device Properties window for the Sony N100 as it appears in the Jamcast Server Manager Devices tab?
Specifically, I'm wondering if IsDlnaCompliant is set to True, this is one possible thing that if False could cause the N100 to essentially ignore Jamcast.
If you could share your upnplog.txt to
http://pastebin.com
, then share the link here, that would be useful too as I'll be able to see what interaction is or isn't taken place between the N100 and Jamcast.
Thanks!
Scott

I set up an account in paste bin, but cant figure out how to copy & paste the properties page of the N100 to it. Sorry, Im only novice level computer literate. However, I did go on to the troubleshooting section and looked at some ways that other players needed to be set and made some changes including the one in question before I sent my original question. The player is DLNA compliant. I did reset the"IsDlnaCompliant" field in the properties window to True, but it didnt bring up the server. I did the usual thing of restarting Jamcast and the N100 after making the changes, but still nothing. I do have 94% signal strength to the N100, so thats not an issue.
Heres some of the settings;
Always Proxy Internet Media - False
Browse Metadata Max Artists - -1
Disable Unpp search - false
Enable SeekTrick Mode- reset to True
Force MP3 capture screen- False
Impersonate WMC - True
Max Format options - -1
Max bits per sample - reset to 24 (Maybe too optimistic?)
Max PCM Sample rate - reset to 96000 ( " " " )
Min PCM Sample Rate - 44100
MP4 supported codec flags - Everything
Suppress Author Role Attribute - False
Suppress Mime Type Attribute - False
Treat as Control Point - False
WMA Supported Codec Flags - Everything
The N100 has a menu setting to list all detected servers and you have the option to click on shown servers. This is where I assume Jamcast would be listed, but nothing is listed at all. The pathetic manual online has nothing about this, other than the ability to play photos, videos and music from your computer files. But I can find nothing else that would apply in the settings menus. In general, Im less than satisfied with the the Sony POS N100, but thats all I have to work with for now.
Whatever help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Any other settings I can get you, let me know
One other property that may help??

Something else I thought of. There is the Windows Firewall Shield in the lower corner of the Jamcast Icon in the system tray. I looked in windows Firewall in the control panel. and the only reference to Jamcast showed it is allowed, but thats only showing in the inbound direction. Is there possibly a setting Im missing thats blocking the server from going outbound?
Im grasping at straws here, but I'd sure like to get this program working.

Hi Otis857,
Thanks for the additional information. Sorry if I confused matters with using pastebin, what I mean to ask for was your "upnplog.txt" pasted to
http://pastebin.com
. This logfile is located in the Jamcast program directory and will show us what discovery activity (if any) is occurring between Jamcast and the Sony device.
Firewalls and any other internet security products could be at fault here. Turn those off and the restart both Jamcast and the Sony device.
Have you ever successfully connected to another UPnP/DLNA media server from this device?
Thanks!
Scott

Ok. I found it and tried to post on Pastebin. The 3 day logfile was too large all at once. I am going to seperate them by days now. The first day,9/26, posted ok on Pastebin. How do I get these files to you?
Also in answer to your ?, I have never set this computer up as a server before and the only streaming device I have is this Sony SMP-N100.

Hi Otis,
Thanks you very much.
Pastebin will go to the URL of your paste after you submit (it should show it as well). You can paste those links here and then I'll be able to click directly thru.
Thanks!

Well, I got the first day on Pastebin, but the 2nd days logfile exceeded the limits of pasting. Will that info alone work for you? I can split it up more if needed

Hey Otis,
Looking now, it appears as if this might be enough.
What's the IP of the Sony device, do you happen to know?
Thanks!

IP address is 192.168.0.1 as shown on the Devices properties tab.
The player shows 2 IP Addresses of 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.5
Dont know if the 2nd address changes anything

Hi Otis,
.0.1 is the gateway address (your router), so the 0.5 will be the address of the network interface on the device itself.
Your logfile shows normal UPnP network interaction between Jamcast and Windows Media Player on the local PC, and also your router. Either WMP or the router's UPnP services could possibly be interfering with Jamcast, so those are 2 things to try.
1) Disable the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service. It also depends on 2 other services -- the UPnP service and the SSDP service. All 3 will need to be stopped, and this should not cause any problems for you.
2) Disable UPnP services on the router -- depending on your router, this procedure will vary. Access your router's configuration and you'll find UPnP-related configuration an option to disable it. You might look for a "Port Forwarding" tab Reboot the router after this change.
Restart the Jamcast Service after this. Then restart the Sony device.
Speaking of WMP, I would have expected your Sony device to "see" this server as well. Nothing there either, eh?
Thanks!
Scott

Ok, I think I have the Media player settings done. I Cant find any YPnP settings in the router settings. THere is an advanced port forwarding tab. but through the whole menu there is no UPnP setting to disable. THe Router is an Actiontec M1000 with a w1000 wifi module that came with Qwest internet svc. if that helps.
If you can send me the procedure to disable the windows media player settings, I can confirm the steps I took. I was unable to find the UPnP & SSDP service boxes to disable

Hi Otis,
Does your router configuration look like this?
http://screenshots.portf.../Q1000_-_Qwest/UPnP.htm
If so, I hope that will be what you were looking for.
Regarding stopping the services, I think this should get you there:
1) Go to Start Menu-->Run...
2) Type "services.msc" and click OK
3) Find the service named "SSDP Discovery Service" and double-click
4) Right-click and stop the service
5) You should be prompted to stop the Universal Plug & Play Device Host and Windows Media Network sharing. Let it shut those down automatically. If you are not prompted, follow the same procedure for all 3 services.
Hope this helps!

The router menu is ALMOST exactly like that. The M1000 is different than the Q1000 that you show on the screenshot. The UPnP option shown on your picture is not there on the M1000 menu. The button on the pic is right below "NAT" on the security tab, but on the M1000, the "NAT" button is the last button in the advanced menu with nothing below it. Figures that Qwest would supply the cheaper version of this router.
How do you get to the run menu in windows 7? It was right there on my old XP computer, but I cant figure out how to get there on 7 to follow your procedure. Sorry for the novice level questions.
I appreciate your patience with this issue and you trying to get to the bottom of the problem. I have an email in to Sony about how to access my music files, pictures, etc. too. Im suspecting that it has to do with the Sony player as they tend to be to proprietorial with their products. I'll work on this again tomorrow, but for now, the 4 letter word is calling - Work.

Hi Otis,
My pleasure. I'll keep checking back and responding!
You can do WindowsKey-R to get to Run. Or, browse to Services via Control Panel/Administrative Tools -- that will get you to the same place. There is also a "Services..." button in Task Manager.
Some of these devices can be finicky, and no matter what anyone tells you I can assure you that "compatibility" in this world is a funny thing sometimes. But Sony tends to be good with this kind of thing, so we'll keep at it until when and if it seems like a lost cause. Not yet though.
Thanks!
Scott

Another thought, when you talk to Sony or locate a user manual, figure out what DLNA media server they recommend for your PC. The device is certainly designed for that type of usage, surely they can help you at least get it working with their recommended software. Working with a known good configuration might expose other issues with your router, networking, or whatever. At this point we can't really point a finger at anything yet...
Just a thought.
EDIT: I see that they recommend a "DLNA compliant PC". Surely this must mean Windows with Windows Media Player Network Sharing enabled. The fact that you had this running earlier, and it too was not showing up on the Sony device, may be telling
Thanks!

Sony response is that "the network media player is able to stream audio content, however video and still images will not stream using the DLNA features in the Windows 7 Operating System." The music file types that are supported when using the DLNA feature: MP3 MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (CBR, VBR)
LPCM LPCM L16 format
They sent a link to set up media streaming through the network sharing center in the control panel. I've been through this about 1/2 dozen times in this process to no avail.
I found the SSDP discovery service through the task manager, but when I right clicked it and tried to stop the service, it said access is denied. Im the administrator and logged in as admin, but it wouldnt let me change it.
Other efforts
I tried changing the network from a home network to a public network, No change
I went back into the router page and set the NAT firewall to off - still no go.
I have Norton Antivirus through Qwest, and I cant find anything on how to set up a DLNA server on their pathetic support site. Could Norton be the hang up here?

Hi Otis,
Hmm, OK. It does sound like Windows Media Player should at least be working with the Sony. It does sound like we're troubleshooting a connectivity issue...
Yes, Norton could definitely be at fault as it could be blocking certain traffic. If you can disable it completely, restart Jamcast and the device afterwards.
I just read something that mentioned the Actiontec router's and mixing wired/wireless networks. How are your PC and the Sony connected to the network? Can you make them both wired connections, or both wireless, at least to see if it makes a difference? Or you do you perhaps have another router lying around?
Thanks!
